Then, you are required to use the following questions to format/organize your response (for the sake of brevity and clarity limit yourself to answering the questions concisely). What is Zara’s competitive positioning strategy (a la Porter, attacking which segment & how, why)? 2b. What is the specific Zara Business Model in relation to its competitors? Which part of the generic value chain is the focal point of the case? 3b. There is a critical link between this part of value chain and how it relates to Zara strategy; what is this linkage? 3c. What must go right for the business model and this aspect of the value chain to work in harmony (i. . , alignment)? 3d. Are the overall Zara “business model” and strategy in alignment? Will “they” be in alignment in the short to intermediate future? Why? 4a. What is the key information required to make the value chain-business model-strategy work? 4b. List the underlying data (items) requirement(s) for this key information (underlying inputs for these)? 5a. What type of IT (a la McAfee HBR article) is the focal point of this case? 5b. What benefits does Inditex/Zara get from this focal IT? 5c. In your opinion, what is most distinguishing about Zara’s approach to IT vs. the industry? Is this difference positive or negative? Why? d. Can other organizations employ this “approach”? Would it would work well? Why/Why Not? 5e. Using Kroenke’s approach to fitting Information Systems to business, is the focal system, fit for Zara’s business and provide a short justification, i. e. , Figure 3-7, page 78 (a couple of sentences only). 5f. What current or potential weaknesses (if any) do you see in Zara’s IT infrastructure and thus IT strategy and potential impact on Business Strategy and Business Model? III. Recommendations 6. How would you advise Salgado to proceed on the issue of upgrading the POS terminals: 6a. Should he upgrade to a more modern operating system?
Yes or no? Why or Why not? 6b. Should the hardware be upgraded and which hardware, please be specific and explain why: PCs, PCs and networking, etc.? 6c. Should the POS applications software be re-written to include any additional functionality? If yes, what specific functionality? If no why? 6d. For each of your 3 answers above (a, b and c), does your recommendation maintain Zara/Inditex current competitive position vis-a-vis Kroenke’s approach (Figure 3-7) or changes it? Why or Why not? Assume, you are working in consultant capacity and must offer practical analysis and useful advice highlighting the core issues and problems that are contained in answering above questions. You can work in groups to brainstorm. Each participant, however, must write his or her response alone. So if you work together to brainstorm, you must separate and write your own answers alone without looking at others’ answers.
